DEQ’s Local Leaders Series Educates Leaders on Potential DEQ Entrance Into Marijuana Cultivation and Processing Facilities

Recently, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) held a “Local Leaders Series Webinar” on “Marijuana Cultivation and Processing Operations: Environmental Regulations and Concerns.” The webinar was well attended by over 500 people. The purpose was to educate local leaders on potential issues with marijuana facilities in their jurisdictions and to expose those leaders to some of the aspect of cultivation and processing operations for educational training.

While we know the licensed Michigan marijuana industry is in its infancy, this webinar raised issues that l licensees and applicants should be aware of and prepared to respond to in terms of waste, air, and water impacts of a facility that might need a DEQ permit in the future. DEQ will be in the field with Bureau of Regulation (BMR)  staff in April to learn more and to determine if there are additional necessary steps from DEQ as the marihuana industry grows. (See slide 29) Additional permitting requirements in this industry could potentially slow an applicant’s entrance into the market.

Stay tuned to Dykema Cannabis law blog for more details as DEQ’s involvement begins to unfold for the industry in  Michigan.
